basic
There is an air of intensity about this studious figure. An ornate headband crafted of gold and purple, set with indigo gems, sits upon his forehead. Thick, slightly unruly silver hair frames either side of his deceivingly youthful face, contrasts deep eyes of a soulful blue. All over, his skin is porcelain pale, a result of residence in a crystalline utopia.
The most impressive item of clothing he wears is a floor-length navy robe, the wide sleeves sewed with an oceanic teal, edges and matching mantle edged with gold, jeweled brooch holding it all snugly about his shoulders. Navy also makes up his sash, while royal teal battles with ivory for dominance in his tunic's color. Matching poofy trousers tuck into loose gem-accented boots.
He may look like easy prey, but an aura of serious magical power follows him constantly. His somewhat sardonic remarks fail to chase the sunlight away completely, however.

personality
Clef is always concerned about something. Personal problems? Definitely kept to himself. Worldly ones? He's always openly agitated on some level. This version of Clef has been through a bit of a disaster and survived, and now is back to his somewhat sarcastic self. He's a bit of a contradiction in that he enjoys imparting knowledge and guiding people, yet can act like it's not worth his time. For the most part, however, he's just deeply devoted to his cause and would rather books than people for company, simply because books don't interrupt.
At heart, Clef is altruistic and deeply involved in the way his world looks and feels, a sort of lifeline of the people and an "old soul". He takes his responsibility very seriously and will not hesitate to sacrifice himself for the greater good... of course, he wouldn't do it without thought because he's also concerned with not screwing up.
When faced with his faults or weaknesses, Clef would rather ignore them. It'll take someone as pushy as he is to get through to him with kindness, but once there, he will regard the person as a close friend and protect them fiercely forever.
history
Clef is a native of a world known as Cephiro, a beautiful utopian dimension inhabited by beasts of myth, strong spirits known as "deities" and the people who make pacts with them. The entire world hinges on belief; the strength of one's heart determines their magical power. This is a world without poverty or disease, and in theory, people can live forever. The most prominent feature of Cephiro is the floating cystalline castle, home to the Pillar of Cephiro, who is not a building but an icon and a role model: a woman named Princess Emeraude whom is adored by all citizens, and whose selfless praying keeps the castle and the world from decay...
However, Emeraude is only human, too, and she fell in love with the High Priest Zagato. This drastic version of Cephiro's timeline has the world beginning to rot as magic slowly drains from it, placing its inhabitants in danger and desperate for a solution. Zagato sacrificed his life so that Cephiro might have another chance, but in the words of Clef himself, "We did not find what it was that we were missing..."
Emeraude wished, then, that her hazy dream of loving Zagato would continue. And since their world was dying, the Pillar's sadness eroding all, this brought them to the final solution and the final world: Rayearth. Otherwise known as modern-day planet Earth.
Clef was one of the few members of the court loyal to the Princess who also understood that this should not come to pass, not like this. The chosen ones who would be bound to the three guardians of Rayearth might fail, and besides-- why should Cephiro have to be the enemy? So he, getting wind of Emeraude's brother's plan, took it upon himself to guide those three prematurely-chosen girls.
Clef nearly died in the process, but he used his magic to place all of Earth save the chosen into a time warp, an attempt to buy some time before the world's possible destruction. After that, he met Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu and served as protector and advisor. Though they didn't always listen... After the final battle began, Clef was a bystander, his words of wisdom echoing in the girls' heads as they used their power of friendship to bar Cephiro and Lord Eagle's selfish desires for an eternal nightmare from destroying the earth.
However, something unforeseen happened in the midst of the battle, and Time scattered all involved across dimensions and worlds. Clef finds himself now wandering a medival, primitive sort of world, with magic far more subtle than he is used to and with residents far more sinister than he once thought. He has also been unable to teleport back to Cephiro; some mysterious force bars all entrance.
For now, Clef combs the lands he can, searching for the three Destined Ones in hopes that they and their connection to their Guardians can restore the worlds of Cephiro and Earth to their proper states.
appearance
roleplay
Clef is a master mage, one of the most powerful in his world, but he is not invincible. Clef can be hurt by spells without a proper shield, and anything that can kill a normal human can kill him if he's caught off guard. Physically, he's not all that strong, though his staff (seven feet, with a birdlike beak and sizeable orb) is heavy and he's adept at swinging it. Clef is also extremely sensitive to his environment and can detect when a strong magical presence is nearby.
Unfortunately, being separated from Cephiro and its parallel has taken a toll on Clef's abilities. His stamina has suffered severely and attempting to cast some of the highest level spells would most likely kill him.
Offensive:
Araya >> Summons sharp ice crystals to pierce the opponent.
Honoya >> Summons fireballs to surround and burn the opponent.
Yerona >> Summons an ultrasonic gust to slice the opponent.
Jerona >> Literally uproots the earth to crush the opponent.
Kilika >> A spell that slowly turns the opponent to stone.
Defensive:
Crysta >> A spell that encases Clef and/or his allies in a bubble that protects from one magical or physical attack.
Esuna >> Transfers Clef's life energy to the target, healing most wounds. Cannot revive the dead.
Neutral:
Ditona >> A powerful area spell that can encases the target in a pocket of frozen time. This is only temporary; if not released within a day, they will disappear forever. This spell drains the most of Clef's energy-- during the Rayearth OVA he uses it on the entire planet Earth and lives, but he's hilariously weak afterwards and can only use one or two defensive spells before keeling over like an old woman in the heat.
Note: This spell is inaccessible to Clef now that his power has been cut.
Unlike most residents of Cephiro, Clef does not have a pact with a creature/deity/mashin, due to his realization of his people's dependence on such pacts and the way it brought about his world's ruin. He has a griffin-steed that he can summon at a call, but it has no magical power. Clef is shown to be one of three people in the entirety of Cephiro to not have a deity, so his power is from his own wishes-- and therefore, greater than most sorcerers from his world.

If you have a problem with me playing a character from canon, don't bother taking it up with me; I won't listen, and you don't have to roleplay with me if you don't want to. To temper just how damn hax Clef is, he's an utter pacifist.
Website, coding, and written content belong to Saffire; 2008. However, the character concept, backstory, etc, belong to CLAMP.
